OSA encourages the continued viability of partnering CBOs through the creation of income generating activities (IGAs). OSA seeks to create sustainable and self-reliant CBOs, which can care for their communities’ OVC without consistently relying on outside support or funding. Through OSA-facilitated, participatory community meetings, community members themselves decide on the type of IGA that is viable, profitable, and achievable for their CBO and its members. OSA provides technical advice on the feasibility of IGAs, business management training, and helps CBOs with proposal writing process and funding for the IGAs. OSA-supported IGAs range from maize mills, paraffin pumps (for fuel) and livestock raising (pigs, goats, poultry), to micro-loan groups, fishing boats, and rental properties . These projects ensure the continued viability of CBOs by providing steady income and profit, which then is able to be divided between comprehensive OVC care and reinvestment in the IGA itself.
